If Stephan Stolchak had known that boarding this particular train in April, 1943, would change his life dramatically—and forever—he might have turned and walked away. But, of course, he didn’t realize what fate had in store for him as he joined his three fellow German soldiers in climbing into the four-passenger compartment. After all, they were helping him celebrate his eighteenth birthday, and they thought they were headed for a beach in Southern France where women sunbathed topless.
In a nearby field, newly hatched yellow tiger swallowtail butterflies tried out their delicate wings, flitting from flower to flower, searching for nectar. One in particular approached a foul-smelling weed and, sensing its fatal odor, moved away quickly, out of danger.
