The ringing phone interrupted Sally in the middle of getting ready for work. She rushed to check who it was. Unknown Caller, read the display. Irritation made her frown. She'd been worried it was some crisis at work, already, before seven in the morning. She stared at the display as the phone rang again. Well, what if it was something important, and the system hadn't picked up the phone number for some reason? If it was a telemarketer, she was going to scream at them, right in the ear.
Sally pressed the answer button and lifted it to he ear. “Hello?”
Nothing. Well, not exactly. Birds calling, some kind of running water. Whoever was calling was outside, so not a telemarketer. She waited a few seconds and said again, “Hello?”
Somewhere on the other side of the line, in the distance, a horse whinnied. She couldn't even hear anyone breathing. This was strange. Maybe someone leaned on their phone and dialed her by accident? Sure, that had to be it. Just a mistake. But something about the sounds on the other end gave her chills.
