Crosseyed and Painless

Elwood knew it was going to be another terrifying day in the city. He quickly lifted the bunker seal and peeked out of the surface like a groundhog. A rapid decision was to be made whether or not to enter the hostile environment in the search of food and supplies. The precious air from the bunker sixty feet underground he lived in was being vacuumed out every second he hesitated. He had no choice. Food supplies had been running low and the mercury from the tuna he ate for the last two weeks finally made him vile.

He crawled out of the hole and sealed it tight. Daytime was the worst period to be outside because the sky was black and the great floodlight struck the earth with piercing beams of gamma rays. The hot temperatures shattered thermometers and cooked the land. All this time, the moon was a symbol to the human race of what the earth would eventually be like.
