"Let me in, Nadia! It's Zack."

Dad's new wife, Nadia, screeched from somewhere inside the dark house. "You crazy? You're late. I don't open that door for anyone this time of night."

Zack Novak thumped the purple painted door then looked up at the July moon, letting out a long groan. He pressed the luminous button on his watch. Okay, so it was after nine, but only just—and he was fifteen. Mrs. Bowen, his friend Joel's mom, stopped them working in her yard forty minutes ago and Zack came straight home.
