Every day I switch on my television and every day I see doom and gloom on the news, current affairs programs and soap operas. It’s almost like we’re being conditioned for misery and woe. You can switch off the television; however, you still can’t escape it. If the talking heads don’t get to you the newspapers will; and if you manage to avoid the newspapers too, your friends will be happy to bring you up to speed on how screwed up the world is. Negativity, mistrust and suspicion have made a home in our consciousness, and we’ve convinced ourselves that we invited them in with open arms. However, nothing could be further from the truth.

Visit any message board, forum, Facebook page or trending topic on Twitter and you’ll notice a common thread. The majority of posters are speaking with one voice; regurgitating the same opinions and beliefs; and loving/hating the same things with almost frenzied enthusiasm. Many of these people, although they may not be aware of it, are simply pawns in a well-executed game of political chess. Those in authority and power are exploiting a very primal but powerful human trait – our most basic emotion – fear.

However, in recent years, the people have started to wake up. The internet has changed the face of the game, and those with a power agenda can no longer control what we think and believe. We are at an important juncture in our history; the human race now has the chance to shape a better future for everyone. It won’t be an easy journey though; negativity, mistrust and suspicion are still very much engrained in our view of the world. Those of us who have become aware are in danger of letting anger, bitterness and frustration guide our thoughts and actions. We have the opportunity to make a difference, so why not make it a positive one?
