Chapter One: About Leila Ahmed
Leila Ahmed was born in 1940, in the Heliopolis district of Cairo. She; is an Egyptian American writer on Islam and Islamic feminism as well as being the first women's studies professor at Harvard Divinity School.
Her father belonged to a middle-class Egyptian family and her mother was from an upper class Turkish background. Leila’s childhood experiences were guided by two aspects of the contemporary society: Muslim Egyptian values and the liberal orientation of the aristocracy, under the ancient regime.
