The bending dirt path snaked far ahead of them, closed in on either side by massive leaning trees that cast great shadowy spears across the way. Jack, lean and smiling and nimble, waltzed ahead. His friend Darius crept along behind. Darius was fat, and his wheezing lungs were ill-equipped to lug such weight over a wild trail. Darius would have chuckled, but he couldn't spare the breath. A harsh wind blew down the trail and into their faces.
