Three years ago I traded in a gray-walled pocket of office space with a distant view of a man-made duck pond for the lemon drop walls of my 1990s kitchen. Yes, I do have a home office in my basement, but I find the convenience of being near the refrigerator more than makes up for the lack of a sturdy desk. My wobbly kitchen table—purchased for a song from its elderly owner who realized country kitsch was no longer stylish—suits me. From my perch in the bay window fish bowl surrounding my breakfast area, I can check my e-mail, reach my phone, and watch my two toddling urchins play in the toy room (formerly known as my living room) all at the same time.
