Chapter 1


‘Are you lost?’ How many years ago did Rhonda first hear those words? Over twenty at least and she recalled that the question soon came her way again. ‘Are you lost?’

That voice, not mellifluent especially. But emollient, calming, seductive even. The man coaxed, not that someone as desperate as her needed much enticing. A teenage girl stood alone and freezing, happily ignored her first instincts. This man was a predator, but she gave an inward shrug, so what? It couldn’t be any worse than the months of abuse she had just left behind her. She stared at the man and waited. Ask me she thought; ask me if I’m hungry. A girl that had been wandering around Reading for hours, needed food and warmth.
