The Deep Dark Woods

She’s smoking out the window when the phone rings. She doesn’t do this because she’s a teenager who doesn’t want to get caught. Rather she’s heard lately that smoking in her condition is not good. Blowing smoke out the window seems to make it better.

She thinks about the first rent reminder, lying on the desk, and wonders why she’s literally burning money on cigarettes while she doesn’t have enough customers to help her get by. But then the pennies spent on little luxuries wouldn’t even make a dint in the rent money – so why go without?

She flicks the butt onto the fire escape and jumps from the window sill to answer the call.
