Below: the towering monument to Berehynia, Slavic goddess / protectress of the homeland, rises above Maydan Nezalezhnosti - Independence Square - in downtown Kyiv. Long the center for political gatherings, the square garnered central recognition during Ukraine's 2004 Orange Revolution. In this photo the tents set up were erected by protesters dissatisfied with the way the Ukrainian government reacted to the 2008 financial crisis.
