Dawn came, and Ben's caravan began swiftly breaking camp. Attempting to cross The Cut during an overcast night was folly; remaining within The Cut for any longer than necessary was asking to be ambushed. Within half of an hour, the wagons were loaded, the cattle hitched, and the men at arms had formed up around the rest of the men and women. Some of the supplies had been shifted to packs in order to make room on the wagons for those wounded in the previous day's attack, but there were still over a hundred healthy men and women not a part of the men at arms, and none were unduly burdened.
