I leaned over the beaker, wiping a bead of sweat off my forehead as the Bunsen burner’s heat radiated against my face. The lab was pretty creepy this late at night, especially with nobody else around, but I was focused on my goal. I didn’t want to leave until this serum was done.
My team and I were working on a potential vaccine for breast cancer that would work by stimulating the lactating function of the mammary gland to—well, I won’t bore you with the gory details, but suffice it to say that success would mean a huge advancement in women’s health. Thousands of lives could be saved.
Maybe that’s why I, the only female member of the team, am still at the lab at 2:45 in the morning on a Friday night—or Saturday morning, I thought with a sigh. Not like my two partners weren’t passionate about the project, but they found excuses to sneak away and have fun just a bit more than I did.
As the mixture came to just the right temperature, I removed it from the burner and quickly decanted it into a specially prepared cell culture. If everything went right, this concentrated serum would be properly diluted, then injected into a test animal. All I had to do was mix it and it would be ready.
