Two weeks before we were supposed to move in to our shared apartment, my best friend Ian called me in a panic.
“You have to help me, Tom” he said, and I could picture him on the other end of the line, cell phone clutched to his ear while he ran his free hand through his curly brown hair in a nervous gesture.
“What’s up?” I asked. I wasn’t overly concerned. Ian was always getting into some scrape or another, and they usually weren’t anything that couldn’t be solved by a cold drink and a good, long talk. He was, as he liked to maintain, an artist, and used that to explain away his high-strung sensitivity.
“You know how I’ve saved up for our rent?”
“I lost it.”
“I lost it. I’m sorry, Tom, I am so sorry. I’ve never gambled before in my life, but I thought the Bulldogs winning was a sure thing and - and I thought that I could maybe win enough to pay for the month after next’s rent too.”
