Lessons in Being Dead

You're a dead man. Wasn't that how the villain always threatened the hero? Holding his family photo, Wesley Becker leaned back on the strange woman Joyce's couch. “But they don't have me yet.” He examined the lines of fire reflected in the amber liquid in his glass. Something about them brought an undercurrent of anxiety. “Maybe I betrayed my country. Maybe I sold secrets to the Russians.”

“Dr Becker, I don't think you understood me. You are dead. Half-dead, that is.” Joyce's voice was firm, sharp, none of that sing-song sweetness.
