The revolver on the desk detracted from the view of the Earth behind Andy Rennick. Though a military member, he wore a plain cut suit, a liberty that Tom, who sat across from him, found without taste.

Rennick leaned forward and nudged the weapon in Tom’s direction. The movement afforded Tom a momentary view of a blue curve of ocean that filled the lower portion of the window.

"So do you understand what I've asked you to do, Mr. Jackson?" Rennick said.

"Yes," Tom said.

"Well then if you understand, what are you waiting for?"

Without breaking eye contact, Tom grabbed the revolver from the desk. Its weight surprised him and he dropped his gaze. Rennick grunted, whether in amusement or disdain Tom wasn’t certain.
