Chapter One

Something was different this morning. Still half-asleep, she tried, by a process of elimination, to work our what it was. If she stretched her right leg down into the corner of the bed she could feel the torch which she'd used for reading under the sheet last night, after her mother had turned off the light. It felt just like it felt every other morning, hard and cold but somehow reassuring, promising safe reading for the night to come.
