When Jane Hayes booked a two-week trip on the Orient Express she hadn’t remotely considered the possibility that the first hour on that train-to-end-all-trains would be spent deep in conversation with a bright, intense, nine-year-old girl from New York.

"Yeah…" the little girl was saying, "My dad’s a workaholic. He has been since my Mom died. At least that’s what my Aunt says. Want to know a secret?" The little girl leaned in closer to Jane.
