Chapter 1

I don’t really know where my first name comes from. All I know is that when I was born there was a big party to celebrate my arrival and it left my dad too tired to register my birth so Grandma Hendry had to go to the mainland to do it instead. I was supposed to be called Matilda and was to be known as Tillie but Grandma Hendry, who’s fond of a tipple, wrote ‘Tippie’ in the register and that’s been my name ever since. Rumour has it she may even have got my birth date wrong as she’s never been very good with numbers. All I know for sure is that everybody celebrates my birthday on the third of April because that’s when Grandma Hendry told them I was born.
