Catch up with Jace and Eric in My Brother, My Soldier 1!
My Brother, My Soldier 2
I always thought living with Jace would be like living with the roommate I had in college.
We’d dick around, mostly. Eat stuff Mom would flip over. Put back a 6-pack every night. Stay up until 4am playing video games. Watch porn. Bond over stupid shit. Regular brother things.
But we were adults now. I had ten years on Jace and he was a hell of a lot older than the nineteen he should be. Even now, six months after being honorably discharged from the Army, I knew there wasn’t a day that went by that he didn’t think about the platoon-mates he’d lost.
Of course, it didn’t help that he had a physical reminder. A piece of shrapnel had edged into his spine in just the right way to paralyze him. A few inches either way and it would’ve severed the spinal cord completely, but he didn’t exactly consider it a lucky break. It took months for him to even be able to move his legs with the help of someone else, and he was just now starting to get around with the aid of a walker. Down the hallway at most, but Jace was a stubborn bastard and he hated that wheelchair.
He’d been living with my Mom and his Dad since being discharged from the VA, but I knew how it felt to be in that house. He couldn’t take a piss without Mom hovering, asking him if he was going to be alright, looking like she might have a heart attack at any moment.
