This is a work of fiction. All the characters and events portrayed in these stories are either fictitious or are used fictitiously.

Following the death or disappearance of half of his treasure-hunting band in the Zanthian steppes, Risgan the relic-retriever is in low spirits. Normally a carefree rogue, he is reduced to the indignity of washing dishes at an inn at the traders’ outpost in Xumanthe. Tawny-haired, wearing leather breeches, jerkin and high black boots, Risgan guards three well-hidden magic items which have not availed him very much fortune—a dazzling gem blessed with granting the powers of youth or aging, also a wish bone, traded for an ancient ring at the Zanzuria market, and a ceremonial rattle that when shaken, evokes thunder from the sky . . . Through naive handling of the youth talisman, he has been afflicted by the gem’s curse and is currently a decade younger than his real age of forty five.
