Darkness jeered at the child, hindering her struggle to keep balanced over the shoulders of the possessed pony as it tore through forested hillside, lurching this way and that, as black shadowed arms reached out scratching her muddied skin.
If only the smell would go away.
The thumping triple-beats of the pinto's hoofs were in sync with the pounding of the child's heart, as the stocky little mare attempted the race to safety.
Neither knew where safety existed. They only knew where it did not.
