Blood of the Father

I was surrounded. There were easily two dozen of them, milling around with hungry eyes. They clustered around the throne, where their queen looked on with manic delight. They fought amongst themselves, vying for her attention. Sentient pools of black pitch surrounded the scene, throbbing with anticipation. They hid behind the fencerow that ringed the scene, seeming to make it breathe.

If I waited much longer, they might start to eat each other. I took a cautious step toward them, and she noticed me.

The queen rose from her seat of honor, and the crowd parted. As she approached, she picked up speed. It was too late to move out of the way. I kneeled and braced myself for the impact. Arms stretched wide, she slammed herself into me.

“Nelson! Hihihihihi!”

I laughed and ruffled her curly hair. “Happy birthday, Miss Mattie. That’s a lovely tiara you have.”

She beamed at me. “Thanks! I’m a princess today.”

“How old are you now?” I asked.

She counted on her fingers. “Six!”

“You’re practically a lady,” I said with a laugh.

The other children clustered back around the table with all of the presents, but one broke away. She walked to me with a self-possession not normally seen on a six-year-old child.
