My Sister, The Brother

I suppose you think the title is just to attract your attention. It’s not true. Well sort of, except that my sister really is my little brother. This is not the sort of fiction that you know is untrue from the beginning— “Oh she’s just making this up.” No, this is real and true fiction. It might be happening even now as we speak.

When you see a boy playing soccer and there’s something a little different about him, it’s because he’s really my sister. No really! We’ve all seen him so it must be true.

I blame my middle sister. She should have been a boy. When I was born, everyone said, “Oh Rosanna, such a pretty name and so like her Mama.” After a girl, everyone was hoping we’d have a boy as if somehow it was important. When she came out a girl, we named her after Isabella, after her Nonna. Then there was a six year gap. Dad was sure that when Mum said she was pregnant again, it would be a boy.
