The sting jolted her from her contemplation of the sunset. Paige slapped the offending mosquito in reflex. Beneath her palm she felt the hot stickiness of blood mixed with a smear of bug body and groaned in disgust.

She blinked, contacts scraping against eyes already irritated by the abundance of grass and pollen. Should have brought her glasses, she thought with genuine regret. A self-confirmed city dweller, she was accustomed to the sterile glass and chrome of downtown. And if the pollution was killing her slowly, that was the price to be paid for the convenience of all night entertainment and 24-hour grocery stores.
