Early in the morning, not so long ago, a visitor to the old Abbey of Orval (Belgium) discovered a corpse in the ruins. Although the ground around the man was dry, his head was in a pool of water. His neck was disfigured by a bright red weal, as if he had been garroted with a wire.

The body was identified as Paul Shoeman. He wasn’t strangled, he was drowned. It had not rained in the week before the murder, the body was found a few hours after the murder had been committed, and yet the collar of his jacket and his shirt were soaking wet.
