This novella was originally written in June 2012 as part of a blogathon to raise awareness and money for the Secular Student Alliance. The original 36 chapters were posted on line at a rate of approximately one per hour. I was especially inspired by the dedicated service of my friend, Sarah Moglia, who thanks to that fundraiser now sports a Mohawk. When you finish the novel you will understand that there is a connection between the novel itself and that event.

The blogged version was a rough first draft, and this version has been significantly revised.

This electronic edition lacks figures; the print version has two maps. The maps are not essential to the reading experience, but if you would like to see them, please visit

Many of the non-English terms used in this book come from Bantu languages, and are best pronounced using the simplest long-form of the vowels. So, there is no "sun" or "son" in "Sungudogo." It is pronounced "Soon Goo Doh Goh." Other terms are Central Sudanic or French and so don't follow the long-form vowel rule. "Sombe" is "Som Bey," and "Lese" is "Less Eh." But really, you are just going to find your own pronunciations and use them in your head so it does not matter.
