Della Markus sat on a bench in the park and stared at the birds pecking the ground where she threw the seeds. She came here often to contemplate her lonely life. Nothing exciting ever happened and she mostly lived through others’ happiness and gaiety.

She wouldn’t say she was depressed, just lonely. She was a large woman, not fat but tall and robust. She was well shaped for her size but men didn’t find her attractive, not even big men. Every time she sat in the park, she wished for a man to love who would love and accept her as she was. Each time she went home to her apartment, which was across the street from the park, it was to nothing and no one.
