The painting on the front cover of this book is by the artist Orest Adamovich Kiprenskii (1778-1836).
This portrait is of Vasily Zhukovsky (1783-1852) who is regarded as the foremost Russian poet of the 1810s and the one who introduced the Romantic Movement into Russia. Zhukovsky presented this famous portrait to Alexander Pushkin upon the publication of Pushkin’s first major work in 1820. The accompanying inscription states: “To the victorious disciple from his vanquished tutor”.
