That first winter away from England was a grim one for the Pilgrims, as my shipmate, Tabatha, recorded in her account of the voyage. Mayflower sailed too late with too few provisions and arrived too far north of her intended destination.
Being a pampered mouse catcher from the lubberly Speedwell, and not accustomed to adventure on the high seas, "Tab" was too timid to go ashore when we anchored at Cape Cod. She stayed with the Pilgrims aboard Mayflower while a handful of men, led by Captain Myles Standish and myself, began to explore the land in which they would build their new home.
