A Pirate of Her Own

Having forgotten her parasol once again, Emily Clayton sat on a bench under the merciful shade of a magnolia tree and watched as a majestic schooner slowly glided through the quiet waters of Charleston Harbor toward the wharf. She swatted at a mosquito and lifted her coppery hair from her damp neck. Although it wasn’t past noon, the day was already hot. Little waves of humidity danced in the air causing the ship to shimmer slightly as though it might not be real. Indeed, with its dark hull and tanbark sails, it could sail stealthily at night, unnoticed, like pirate ships of old.
