The first time I saw a man try to cross the perimeter was when I was nine years old. At least, that’s the first time I remember. I was born in this ghetto, and I’ve lived here my entire life. Maybe I’d seen other attempts like that one before and just forgotten. We all know where the boundaries of the ghetto are. The perimeter is clearly marked with sigils. Some people say that closing us in with a barrier that you have to look for - rather than fences or walls that you can easily see - is intended as a form of psychological torture. We can always see the world outside of the ghetto; we just can’t ever reach it.
