Chapter 1 New Entry Training

I’m not sure exactly when the decision was made to join up, but the decision was inevitable. I had broken up with my first love about six months before, and after exhausting my little black book and adding some new names, I had been unable to find an acceptable replacement. Indeed Edmonton had become too small. So it was that I found myself at the doors to HMCS Nonsuch, Edmonton’s stone frigate in January 1951. The Korean War was in full swing at this time, and I hadn’t gotten over my disappointment of not being of age when World War 2 was over. I was 15 when the war ended, and after being in cadets since I was 11, I really wanted to join the action. All young boys who lived through the war were bombarded with the idealism of fighting for freedom.
