Young Santa Claus

Kris Kringle needed an extra arm. He held Toby’s head down with one hand and with the other tried to push the heavy collar over the horse’s head. His father was leaning on the stall gate across the barn hallway and could have lifted the collar with one finger, but hadn’t moved to help. Kris was thankful. If he was to sleigh to school by himself, he wanted to harness the horse by himself. After some balancing and a final shove, Kris slipped the collar into place. He looked up with relief, but his father didn’t smile. He simply stroked his dark mustache and beard—there was more to do. Kris stretched on tiptoes to spread the harness over Toby’s broad back. He fastened every buckle, threaded every line and secured the shafts of the sleigh to the harness. He was finished.
