Who am I? Derek Smith, son of Charles and Jane Smith, born near east end park, Leeds, UK. Raised at 14, Rookwood Avenue, Osmondthorpe, Leeds 9, UK. Born 7th April 1948.

As a young child under 5, I had already been hospitalised twice, first to have a lump removed from under my right arm and second to have my tonsils removed. By the age of eight, I had broken my right wrist twice. Impaled my left leg on a metal spike, and cut open my chin in a swimming pool, which needed 7 stitches. My mother was always ill and spent a lot of her time in hospital suffering with TB. My father worked two jobs so was rarely at home; as a result, my older sister, Christine, and I had to pretty much raise ourselves and I used to take myself to the hospital.
