I swung my flashlight around, highlighting the destruction. The missing camper's tent was half-collapsed, with the supporting poles snapped on the torn side. Her camping supplies were scattered around, tossed like trash. So she didn't just wander off, then. Damn. Desperate for clues, I scanned the ground for footprints. That's odd.
Hundreds of massive prints surrounded the tent, but none were human. An odd assortment of animals seemed to have been sniffing around. There's a huge wolf-print, that's a big cougar... good lord, is that a bear track? It must have been enormous! What the hell had happened here? The way the tracks intermingled seemed to suggest that several ridiculously over-sized predatory animals had been here at the same time! What the fuck? I pulled my long braid over my shoulder, nervously brushing my chin with the end.
Dubiously, I traced the tracks around the campsite, careful to avoid contaminating the crime scene. The bizarre animals had circled around before zeroing in on the tent, with the prints clustering tightly near the damaged side. So it was some freakish animal attack. That poor girl didn't stand a chance. The tracks led off into the woods. Did they carry off her body? Some large predators had been known to drag away their prey to safer feeding grounds, after all. It was a grisly possibility.
