Charlotte looked at the hair in her hand and began to cry. It was finally beginning, the day she had dreaded for years.
Ten years earlier, when Charlotte was only nine years old, the village had held a beauty pageant. It hadn’t been meant to be a big thing, just a fun opportunity for the girls of the village to dress up in their most beautiful dresses and parade around while the crowd of villagers crowded around, oohing and aaahing at the girls.
Charlotte was, at that point, already quite beautiful. In fact, she was so beautiful that she was awarded the first prize ribbon, ahead of all the other little girls. She ran up to her mother and father, beaming in the crowd, proudly waving her blue ribbon like she’d just won the best prize in the world, when all of a sudden it was torn from her grasp.
Shocked, Charlotte turned to look, and saw the local witch, the mother of Evelyn, who came in second place. Her curly, unkempt black hair looked like crows made their nests there; the woman terrified Charlotte, who began to cry almost immediately, wanting her ribbon. The witch cackled and held it just out of her grasp.
“You might be the most beautiful girl in the village now, but let me tell you little girl, when you turn nineteen years old and your beauty approaches its peak, it will start to fall out. First, it will be strands. Then clumps. Then you will find yourself bald, within the year, and no man will have you then!” the witch exclaimed, to the shock and horror of the crowd around.
