A Petty Slight

It was pre-dawn, the darkest hour of the night, just before the first glimmers of light touch the sky. The storm that had rocked the city through the night had faded into heavy cloud cover and a light drizzle that steadily soaked the cobblestone streets. On the balcony outside the Mayor’s office, a lone figure in pajamas rested his elbows on the rail and stared into the darkness.

He let the sound of the rain wash over him, wishing it could purge the memory of the last few hours from his mind. Instead, echoes of the past hammered at him, replaying constantly through his mind. He stared at his hands, clenched to keep them from shaking, and wondered if he had gone insane. The stress of his office had done it to men before him. But no, he thought. He knew what he had seen and what he had heard. The only insanity was on his visitor’s part.
