It's pitch dark. We've driven for what seems like an eternity down dirt roads and made numerous turns. I have completely lost track of where we are, and it has been a while since I've seen any lights from houses or cars. He finally parks the car. All I can see through the windows are dark silhouettes of brush and tumbleweeds. It's eerily quiet outside the car.
My focus is on the gun pressed against my temple. At the other end of the gun is the man who promised to love, honor, and cherish me. He is telling me that he is about to kill me and then kill himself. I am making promises and telling him anything I think he wants to hear. While I am pleading to him, I am speaking to God in my head. "I'm so young." "Please don't let me die this way." "I'm not ready." I begin to think how I probably won't hear the gun when it fires, it will be a sudden nonbeing. I don't think I will have time to feel pain; at least that is my hope.
