For years Pluto had sat empty in the barrenness of space, with only its tiny moon Charon orbiting it. Within recent years it had gained a second moon, the Deep Space Research Laboratory. The Research Lab was the only deep space laboratory in existence, and each day it conducted hundreds of experiments. It was also a moderately armed outpost, which was the stated reason for General Jerome Shaw's visit.
It had taken a lot of called-in favors, but Shaw had finally been able to get permission to take a deep space shuttle out to the Lab to inspect its readiness. The Lab was lightly armed and hardly worth the trip, except for the real reason the three star general had braved the wilds of deep space to come to the Solar System's most remote location. A reason that made this trip a sad one for Shaw.
