He read of her death in New Mexico while riding a ferry bound for Alaska. As he read the last page of the Lifestyles section of a local newspaper, Frank Hemsky glanced at an article headlined, “Town Celebrates Day the Sky Fell.” The town of Little Mesa, New Mexico planned a weeklong festival to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of a meteor shower that had nearly wiped out the original town. A single sentence in the article also noted that Little Mesa would also dedicate the Vera Swinton Memorial Park at the end of the festival to honor the local heroine.
Frank’s cigarette fell into his lap when he read that sentence. They only gave you a memorial park if you were dead. Vera Swinton had died in New Mexico. He couldn’t believe it. Twenty-five years after she had left a note on her pillow in Bar Harbor, Maine she had reappeared in his life. Only this time as a corpse.
