“Shit, shit, shit,” I swore, juggling my lunch and my coffee as I locked my apartment door. I was running late for the third day in a row, and I really did not want another lecture from my horrible miser of a boss. Even so, I stopped dead in my tracks in the doorway of my apartment building.
“What the...” A layer of fog hung over the parking lot, so thick I could barely see my car. There was something eerie about it that I couldn’t put my finger on. All I knew was that I didn’t want to walk through it.
Feeling more than a bit silly, I pulled out my cell phone and dialed my boyfriend’s number. “June?” Dave sounded surprised and a little irritated. “Aren’t you on your way to work?”
I sighed inwardly. Dave and I had been fighting a lot lately; it was a sign of how freaked I was that I’d called him at all. “I was, but did you see that fog?” I stared out into it. Tendrils of mist swirled lazily across the lot, although I couldn’t feel any breeze.
“Yeah, it’s thick. You should drive carefully, especially once you exit civilization,” he said smugly. Dave finds the remote location of my workplace a constant source of amusement.
