Voice Sign

It's easy for a deaf-guy to get girls, Henry thinks as he sits at the flume hood, transferring serum from tubes into cryovials. He's never had a problem, even in his entire life, getting girls. At twenty-four, as he siphons clear liquid and drops the precise amount into the waiting mouth of the vial—it would be too easy to think about what he is doing as a cliché metaphor for certain sorts of sexual acts—he's already had countless lovers.

He includes in the lovers the hearing-impaired girls in the sign-language classes his parents brought him to, girls who fought to sit next to him and followed him around. These of course did not cross over into the sexual area—that didn't happen until he was thirteen—but there was sexual interest all the same and it was mutual.
