Eren reached down and rubbed the small charm he wore around his neck. TJ had given it to him in high school for luck. It was a small gold circle with the imprint of a green leaf clover. Eren had pointed out to TJ that it had to be a real green leaf clover for it to count. TJ insisted the charm was just as good. Eren had teased TJ about it, but he always wore it and so far it had never failed him. He waited for the zombies to clear a little and mapped out a path. He took a deep breath, gave the charm one more rub, and then ran.
His shoes slapped over the linoleum. He tried not to look as zombies shambled after shoppers or peered at him. He was almost there. Dead fingers brushed over his collar. He yanked away, stumbling a little, but caught himself. He twisted and ran around the corner. There!
Just down the corner was Daniel's Watches. He felt a flood of relief as he saw it. Just as he took a step forward, he felt something grab the back of his jacket. He turned around and stared right into a half-decomposed face and got a nose full of bad breath. He tried to yank away, but the zombie's grip was strong. Behind him he heard the distinct clank of the store gate descending.
There's no way I'm going to be eaten by a zombie!
He shoved his shoulder into the zombie's chest, throwing it, and nearly himself, off balance. Instead of falling, he caught himself enough to struggle free of his jacket, so when the zombie went crashing to the ground it did so alone.
Eren jumped over the zombie and ran for the store. The gate was almost closed. He put on a burst of speed, dodging zombies that moved towards the store, drawn by the sound. He reached it just as the gate was almost closed.
Please let this work.
Quickly he threw himself forward, like he was skidding towards home base and somehow, miraculously, he made it just as the gate slammed shut. His heart slammed in his chest and he could hear the sound of his heavy breathing. Slowly he pushed himself up.
Two men and a woman stared at him. One of the men was dressed in a suit with a gold nametag. The other two were an older couple.
