FOREWORD

This little book distills twenty years of work with writers who need to know how to write an effective argument, and do not want, or need, to plow through a pile of academic texts to find out how to do so. It is intended for the beginning writer as well as the person who realizes there is more to argumentation than appears on the surface.

Effective argumentation does not ignore emotion, and in fact, makes use of it, not to manipulate deviously, but with awareness of its power to persuade. The most effective argument will always take ethos, pathos, and logos into account. Without all three, you’re missing something crucial your listener or reader needs to hear to be persuaded, and your argument will be imbalanced.
