CHAPTER ONE

FRIDAY

Susie Troutman opened her eyes.

“Jessie-ka! Is Miss Becky on yet?” she called. Her bed was so warm and comfortable that she didn’t want to get up.

“It’s almost five, little Pickle,” Jess called from the living room downstairs. “I was just going to wake you up.” Jess always insisted that Susie take a rest after school was out and homework done. Even on Fridays when she had no homework. Susie hated being treated like a baby. After all, she was six and a half years old and in first grade. But it was funny - she always seemed to fall asleep.
