“Up, Alyma, up!”
I awoke with a start to the sound of a familiar voice.
“Katshey?” I groaned sleepily as my vision came into focus.
“Yes?” she stood above me, smiling.
“Katshey!” I flung my arms around her in a hug. She seemed taken aback, but responded after a few seconds and hugged me back. “Where have you been?”
“Around,” she said vaguely. “But we must hurry now.”
I pulled away. Is she going to help me escape? I wondered. I quickly quelled the thought when I noticed her state of dress. She was wearing make up, her lashes heavier and darker and the edges of her eyelids highlighted with luminescent violet paint. Her hair, which normally hung loose, was now tied back neatly with glittering silver ornament. The cloth she wore around her waist today was heavy and embroidered, and bore the look of a ceremonial garment.
“I have to dress you,” she told me. “Come. Samhala has requested that you be ready as soon as possible.”
“Dress me for what?” I asked apprehensively as I hurried to untangle myself from the sheets. Katshey didn’t answer. She merely beckoned me silently towards the bathroom. I was irritated with her silence, but I did not press, as I knew by now that it was unlikely that I could convince her to tell me any more.
