The Red Rooster Crows Twice

The memorial service held in Mel’s home town June tenth two thousand and ten, Lori’s parents were there and stayed on a few days to visit with their grand daughter. The memorial service had been a simple affair and except for some photos of Lori it had been more like a church service just to give those left behind some closure not at all like a funeral service. No remains had been recovered to bury it was just a simple memorial service. Mel had served his country first as a Marine officer and then as a pilot and secret service agent. He’d seen death; that which came with war and those of his brothers in arms some were also friends; so he had seen and experienced it. Though several months had past since they learned of Lori’s fate he could see that it had been very hard for the Simpson’s and Lori’s long time friends to come to grips with the reasons she died. It made no sense why a nobody like her would even be taken in the first place; but in his heart he knew it must have been a sick act of retribution by those he stopped in their plot to kill Americans.

The rescue mission that Mel had been given had been executed flawlessly; John Price had been returned unharmed, the high tech plane had been taken back from the Chinese without creating and international incident. New evidence as to the persons responsible for Lori’s abduction had come to light, the Chinese had played only a minor part but the real culprit remained elusive and Mel could not rest until those persons were brought to justice. Mel had debated whether to get a house keeper slash nanny for Sally and adjust to being a single dad. Lori’s parents had offered to help raise Sally in their home, but leaving her with them he didn’t think he could take being separated from his daughter. It was true Sally was too young to be on her own while he was out in the field hunting down Lori’s captors the best in the end he supposed the best thing that could happen was for Mel to meet and marry again and provide his daughter with a substitute mother.
