Chapter One

Adam Perry pulled his overcoat around his shoulders to prevent the cold September wind from biting into his flesh and hurried to The Swan public house to meet his best mate, Wilfred Adcock. It had been a diabolical day and his cheerful, exuberant nature and optimistic view of life had been whittled away, leaving him feeling bad-tempered and pessimistic. It had rained non-stop all day and had turned the woodyard where he worked into a quagmire. The onset of winter, his moaning, tight-fisted gaffer, his digs - even though Connie, his landlady, was a good stick, his room was no bigger than a cupboard - and the starvation wage that he was forced to live on, were the ingredients of depression and offered no hope for the future. It was small wonder he felt hard-done-by.
