Balboa high school, Panama Canal Zone
11 November 1969
Amy Gayle watched the small group of demonstrators in front of Balboa High School for a moment, then strolled through the group of picketers, took a seat on a ledge on the other side, and pulled a sketch pad out of the shopping bag she was carrying.
They were all seniors, all wearing black arm bands, and a few carrying crudely lettered signs reading “NO WAR” or “OUT OF NAM NOW”. They were not a rowdy bunch as demonstrations go, but it was hard to escape their sincerity, even when their efforts to chant anti-war slogans together faded out for lack of enthusiasm. The three cameramen who mingled among them snapping streams of photographs were more than conspicuous. It was obvious that some of the demonstrators were trying hard to avoid the cameras.
